In 1995 New Zealand won the America’s Cup in San Diego by a
staggering five: nil. Leading the team was Kiwi legend Peter Blake. Before
Team New Zealand could qualify for the America’s Cup challenge it had to
first beat all comers in the Louis Vuitton series.
Somehow I just "knew" we were going to win the America's Cup even before we
had won the Louis Vuitton challenge. Knowing too that it was going to go
down in history as one of New Zealand's greatest sporting moments, I was
inspired to paint the Black Boat and so procured the
appropriate licence to do an official portrait, to release as a limited
edition commemorating the occasion. This was a fortunate move, because
several artists applied for a licence after the fact of us winning the cup,
so my painting was the only officially licenced fine art portrait of Black
Magic.
